Time Management and Work-Life-Balance

Time Management and Life Balance.

Time Management

Countless past clients of mine have complained they do not have time to do everything they need to on a day-to-day basis. The cause is often ineffective time management.

Here are some time management tips -

- Set realistic time based goals. Know how long it takes to perform each task;

- Prioritize, schedule the most important tasks that add the greatest value;

- Pull similar tasks together so as to not repeat work;

- Establish which / what resources should be used to complete tasks most effectively in the least time;

- Where possible, automate your workflow;

- Make a to do list at the end of each day. Mark off items completed at the end of the day. Re-schedule incomplete tasks;

- Set time limits for your tasks and activities;

- Take breaks between tasks;

- Organize yourself and your tasks;

- Remove non-essential tasks and time wasters;

- Plan ahead;

- Stop being a perfectionist. Sometimes perfect is a hinderance and not necessary;

- Learn to say no, AND not feel guilty for saying no.

It’s a fallacy that the more time we work, the more we will get done in a day. The longer we work in a day, the less effective we become and therefore less productive.

How effectively we use our time is what counts.

In general, in the days I worked in the corporate sector in a leadership role, my output was at least a third more than my peers and team mates. What’s important to note here is that I worked at least two hours a day less than my peers and team mates.

Companies, businesses, and organisations that need their staff, managers, and leaders to work between nine to twelve or fifteen hours a day (as an example), are doing something very wrong. If a person and or team cannot get through what they need to in an eight or a nine-hour day, their role and the business should go through a business / company / organization maximization process. This could include a role maximization process.

Work Life Balance

Nurturing oneself is important as it contributes to good mental, spiritual, and physical health and an increase in one’s overall wellbeing and happiness levels.

It can be argued that work life balance can contribute to increased longevity due to reduced stress levels. Stress has been shown to be a contributor to many illnesses.

Therefore, it is imperative that you introduce work life balance into your life and work. You will be more productive, efficient, have healthier interpersonal relationships, and in general, be happier in the work-place.
